No one would be prepared for what came next. I was astonished. It wasnt an accident. Its not natural, its not right. And the most chilling part do you thinks heather would still be alive if she hadnt gone through this transformation . Yes. The motive behind it all. Im lester holt, and this is dateline. Heres Andrea Canning with the last dance. Memphis, tennessee, a little hot spot not far from nearby beal street. They dont play the memphis blues in this club. In the sultry darkness of the rumba room, bodies sway to the beat of latin sounds. In april 2013, a woman named Heather Jones came in with her friend to dance the night away, she had her head up so high, and her shoulders back and just beaming, and she felt absolutely beautiful. Just two nights later, everything spun out of control. Breaking news about a missing germantown teacher. Heather jones, suddenly and ixex plikably disappeared from her home. Her car is in her driveway, all her purse, keys, and cell phone are missing. Think
Folks, we live in the best place in the world. And i know youve heard me say that a lot. And ill continue to say it. But because it continues to be true. And the reason we live in the best place in the world is because of our people. Nebraskans give to their communities. We share a common set of principles. We treat each other with dignity and respect. And we care about each other. Im proud of the fact that nebraska is one of the top states in the nation for volunteerism. The kids of cub scout pack 190 picked up trash on highway 7 last year. When floods slammed into dewitt, i saw firsthand the community pull together, neighbors helping neighbors. I met volunteers like john law from omaha helping clean houses whose basements filled to the ceiling with mud and water. I want to thank john. John is here today. For joining us and setting such a great example for volunteer work. John, can we recognize him . [ applause ] and of course, there is no better example of service than the heroes of
States, staying out of a war, trading with all sides in europe, not being limited by alliance to france or Something Like this. So were really seeing this treaty become kind of of a symbolic head point between these two sides. And the Senate Approves the treaty. Now according to the constitution Senate Approves treaties and theyre done. The problem is the house of representatives this is our first treaty. The house of representatives says, we want a chance to discuss this treaty as well. And so they demand of washington to see all the papers and so on. Well, he says, no. Senate approves it. You dont have anything do with it. What the house essentially is going doing is they say, maybe what we will try do is take away the funding. We wont pay for this treaty. Anything that has to be paid for, we will not spend the money. Therefore, the treaty will die at this point this time. Thats not necessarily a new strategy that you see with things in washington, d. C. Today. So the big fight in th
Day. Because this is where we are proving that the system where we the voters elect our leaders and we change them when we vote, ato washington, d. C. Are burned when washington is burned in the war of 1812. We lose a lot of the early things. Thats one of the challenges with a building like this, you dont necessarily have all the thing things, but you make due the best you can to give people the sense when they come in to see them of what it looked like when men like James Madison or Young Andrew Jackson were sitting in this room as members of the house of representatives. Were in the Senate Chamber here at Congress Hall in philadelphia. The room as you can see is quite a bit more grand than the house of representatives would have been. Theres a couple of reasons for that. Our roots as a nation go back to when we were british, of course. The british have a parliament with two houses. An upper house, the house of lords, lower house, house of commons. Theres definitely parallels with our
Dedicating his flag to all the other men who are still missing in action or prisoners of war in vietnam. A lot of times veterans, if they want to come see the things that they left, we are always willing to give them a tour and show them around. It also helps us because we can connect specific names, donors to what they left. We have a big barrel that was left. I think it was left in 2002. I am too young to know what it was. But i have been told that in vietnam they used it as a letrine. An unfortunate soldier was given the job of burning it. But they came and they gave us a bit of context about what it was and when they left it and why. So thats really cool. Theres some donors who are still really active and want to see the things that they left. So this, as you may or may not know, is a roll of toilet paper. You may wonder why we have it in our collection. But toilet paper was as good as gold in vietnam, because if you were out in the field and you didnt have any toilet paper, you ha
