After COVID year off, Miles City Bucking Horse Sale comes back kicking

Like all great cowboys, the Miles City Bucking Horse Sale doesn’t quit. For 70 years, the four-day event carried on through whatever national hard times came along — wars, recessions, the farm crisis, domestic terrorism, and whatever else. And, then came 2020 and the COVID-19 pandemic. For the first time ever, the world famous “cowboy Mardi Gras” was called off. Organizers did not take the cancellation lightly. Not only would it take the fun out of springtime in Eastern Montana, losing the event would cost the region millions in lost tourist spending. “We tried putting a number on what was lost last year by the cancellation,” said John Laney, director of the Miles City Area Chamber of Commerce. “We got up to about $20 million and said, ‘Let’s just stop counting, let’s not look anymore, it’s too painful.’ ”

Beauty Queens & Rodeo Kings at the Miles City Buckin Horse Sale From beauty queens to some of the kings of buckin bronc rodeo, we had a great turnout at the Miles City Chamber of Commerce as we helped kick off the 70th Anniversary of the World Famous Miles City Buckin Horse Sale. Miss Montana, Miss Rodeo Montana, and Miss Southeastern Montana Rodeo Teen Queen all showed up to join us for our statewide radio show Montana Talks with Aaron Flint just before several cowboys walked through the front door. Wally Badgett wrangled up an incredible lineup for us. RFD-TV describes Wally as someone who himself  rode in the Miles City Bucking Horse Sale, and rodeos all over the country for that matter. He is also a syndicated cartoonist, college rodeo coach and so much more.

MILES CITY, Mont. - The world famous Bucking Horse Sale is back in Miles City after canceling last year, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The four day event kicked-off Thursday with two concerts, followed by a full day of rodeo events Friday. We’re happy to be able to put it on and we’re grateful everybody came back. Anytime you don’t have an event you always worry about kicking it back up, but our worries have been satisfied. We’re happy, we’re proud of what we have here in Miles City and we want people to come and enjoy it with us, Laney said.
