PIERRE – Changes are likely ahead for wrestling in South Dakota, both in the weight class structure of girls wrestling and the schedule for the boys tournament.
Earlier this week, the SDHSAA Board of Directors approved the first reading of a rule change that will allow for various weight classes in girls wrestling. They will include 106, 113, 120, 126, 132, 142, 154, 170, 190 and 285 pounds. Also, at state girls wrestling, each school will only be allowed one wrestler in each classification. This past season, schools were allowed to have multiple wrestlers in each class.
The format of boys’ state wrestling will change. Now, the Thursday and Friday sessions will include the team competition in all weight classes. Saturday will be set aside for the dual tournament.
