As reported, Dr John Knighton urged people to ‘seriously think’ about their actions and make sure they ‘minimise all contact with others’.
He said: ‘We are in a period where numbers of cases of Covid are rising rapidly in our hospital and we know they re going to continue to rise for some time until the tier four restrictions starts to have an effect, hopefully.

‘Our staff have been working flat out across many areas of the hospital. Most areas of the hospital now are working way beyond their normal capacity.’

Leaders at University Hospital Southampton said they are managing the number of Covid patients treated at the city hospital. But they said they remain vigilant. It comes as the Queen Alexandra Hospital in Cosham is at risk of becoming overwhelmed, according to Simon Bryant, director of public health at Hampshire County Council. Details of the number of Covid patients admitted to Hampshire hospitals this month have not been released. But in a meeting held earlier this week Dr Bryant said: We know that Portsmouth hospital is the trust with the most number of cases being admitted recently and it s at risk of becoming overwhelmed.
