Several members of the u. S. Swim team are in hot water after questions arise surrounding their claims of being robbed at gunpoint in Rio De Janeiro during the olympic games. Police are still investigating the incident, but, confirm the robbery as told by the athletes did not happen. The athletes were with fellow swimmers james feigen and u. S. Olympic Gold Medalist ryan lochte sunday morning when they said they were robbed in a taxi as the athletes village from a party. The incident occurred several hours after the last olympic swimming events were held. But, the gas station attendant says they were drunk and damaged the bathroom. The stations security called the police and the athletes became aggressive, prompting him to confront them. It is my pleasure this morning to introduce brooks simpson, the Asu Foundation professor of history at Arizona State university. He is a historian of 19th century america. The american presidency as well as the civil war and reconstruction. He has written extensively about ulysses s. Grant. He is the author of let us have peace . S grant and the politics of reconstruction, released in 1991. He is also the author of u. S. Grant triumph over adversity. That earned distinction as a New York Times notable book of the year. And because that capital was defended by none other than robert e lee and his army of Northern Virginia, the largest fighting force the confederacy had to offer, led by its most brilliant commander.
