Hoffman said Coates has received more acclaim in Europe than she has in her native United States. Having her work published in Edition Peters is giving Coates recognition that is far overdue, Hoffman said. She developed a particular form of music. It s not written in the manner of Mozart, Haydn or Beethoven. Some people loved it, some didn t. It s very different, very progressive, and is now becoming recognized by a new generation of people, he said.
In 2014, Mark Swed, a music writer for the Los Angeles Times called Coates a mesmerizing American symphonist and our last maverick.
He said one reason that Coates s music hasn t had a high profile in the United States was because she lived in Munich and she is an outsider, not a participant of the international music promotion business.
