Itsekiri nation has formally announced the passage of its monarch, Ogiame Ikenwoli at Ode Itsekiri, its ancestral home in Warri, Delta State.
The Iyatsere of Warri kingdom and Acting Chairman Warri council of Chiefs and Olu Advisory council, Chief Johnson Amatserunreleghe announced the development at exactly 11.32 am before a gathering of Itsekiri prominent chiefs, sons and daughters.
According to Vanguard report, he also said a period of mourning had been declared for the Itsekiri nation that will run for three months.
The palace in a statement initially denied the demise of the first-class monarch, describing the story as untrue.
Despite the denial, SaharaReporters gathered that there has been tension in the area over who succeeds the monarch.
The crisis has also resulted in the suspension and counter-suspension of some high profile chiefs of the palace.
Following the rejection and disqualification of Prince Tsola as the successor to the throne, a member of the royal family, Emmanuel Okotie-Eboh, had few days ago announced the purported suspension of the head of the Olu’s advisory Council.
The council is headed by the Ologbotsere of Warri, Ayiri Emami.
The late Emiko died in December 2020 from COVID-19 related complications.

A new Olu of Warri has been chosen to succeed the late Ogiame Ikenwoli Godfrey Emiko, SaharaReporters has learnt.

A source in the palace to SaharaReporters that the person chosen for the throne is the late Olu of Warri s 37-year-old son. A formal announcement will be made in two days after completion of palace rituals, the source added.
Emiko, the 20th Olu of Warri, died a week after his fifth coronation anniversary.
He was among the contacts of the late Major General John Irefin, who died on December 10, 2020 in Abuja from COVID-19 complications.

The Olu, who celebrated his fifth coronation anniversary on December 12, 2020, was alleged to have taken ill and died shortly after on Monday from COVID-19 complications.
He reportedly met Major General John Irefin, who died from COVID-19 recently.
The Guardian recalled that a similar scenario played out when the former Olu of Warri, Ogiame Atuwatse, passed away in March 2015 as the palace promptly denied his death, saying he was only ill, until the traditional council of chiefs announced his passing two weeks after.
