Joseph Poitra received time served for his part in the death of Phillip Dewey Bergquist. Bergquist's father said the family plans to plant a tree near the Moorhead Bergquist Cabin in his son's honor.
George Ortiz appeared to kill Phillip Dewey Bergquist in an attempt to tell others he wasn't one to be messed with, but the defendant claimed Bergquist was coming after him and his family.
Phillip Bergquist, a homeless homicide victim found near the Red River on Oct. 30, is directly related to John Gustav Bergquist. The Swedish immigrant was one of the area's first settlers and built the Bergquist Cabin in 1871, Moorhead's oldest home.
