Grant to accelerate AI materials discovery and design

May 18, 2021 Cornell is partnering in a $36 million grant from the Toyota Research Institute (TRI) for its Accelerated Materials Design and Discovery (AMDD) collaborative university research program, which seeks to use artificial intelligence to discover new materials that could help achieve emissions-free driving. Carla Gomes, the Ronald C. and Antonia V. Nielsen Professor of Computing and Information Science in the Cornell Ann S. Bowers College of Computing and Information Science, is among the lead researchers on the four-year, multi-institution grant. “AI for scientific discovery is among the most promising but challenging areas of AI,” said Gomes, who is also director of Cornell’s Institute for Computational Sustainability. “TRI’s multidisciplinary approach enables our team to develop new AI approaches for materials discovery. We combine data-driven deep learning with knowledge-driven reasoning and optimization techniques. This approach allows us to inject scientifi

Mantha says insurance hikes are hurting businesses

SHARE ON: Algoma-Manitoulin MPP Mike Mantha says small trucking and tourism businesses that are struggling to stay afloat in Northern Ontario are being weighed down by brutal insurance rates. During question period yesterday, Mantha says he wants to see Premier Ford take action against insurance premiums that are killing businesses in Ontario. Mantha told the legislature about local trucker, John Gregoire who told him after changing his truck, his insurance went up from $10,000 to $35,000 a year and he had no choice but to go work for a bigger trucking company. MPP Guy Bourgouin’s has put forth a motion for a truck owner-operator strategy to tackle the truck driver shortage and increasing truck insurance costs, which will be debated at Queen’s Park next week.
