The GBI on Monday identified the deceased as Marquavious Rashod Parks, 26, of Athens.
Authorities said Parks and John Frank Snow, 51, of Monroe were involved in a contraband drop at Washington State Prison, a facility in Davisboro, east of Sandersville. The facility is described as a minimum and medium security prison.
The GBI reported that the two suspects were at the prison to drop off the contraband when they were confronted by law enforcement at 10:39 p.m.
State K-9 officers then engaged in a shootout with one of the suspects that left one officer wounded, according to the GBI. The GBI did not identify which of the suspects was involved in the gunfire.
