The Hotel California of eco-labels?

You can check out, but you can never leave, Eagles co-frontman Don Henley sang on the iconic Hotel California. It s a metaphor that some fisheries that have lost their Marine Stewardship Council eco-label can no doubt relate to. The loss of an MSC certificate can have dire consequences, and it s often the little guys that get squeezed. Join Drew Cherry, John Fiorillo and John Evans as they discuss the responsibility if any the MSC has to former clients, and whether or not the latest eco-label loss proves the group s independence. We also discuss John Evans series on foodservice. Listen below, or visit iTunes, Spotify or wherever else you get your podcasts.

Global Seafood Marketing Conference: Strong shrimp, farmed salmon outlook, plant-based proteins headline event

IntraFish s live updates from the National Fisheries Institute s Global Seafood Marketing Conference in Orlando, Florida. Got milk? For now Jim Mulhern of the National Milk Producers Federation doesn t look like a prize fighter, but when he joined the association, he saw an industry that had let the plant-based foods sector walk over it for too long. This is an issue we ve been dealing with for the better part of 35 years, Mulhern said. The problem is, we played nice. I decided not to play so nice and deploy a different strategy and raise visibility of the issue with consumers and legislators.

LETTER: We need industry effort to change perception of aquaculture

David E. Kelley is a good choice because he has the name cachet to bring attention to the panel and actually is backing a sizeable US aquaculture operation that represents a long established part of the finfish aquaculture industry in the US – trout and salmon. One observation: Referring to the organizers of SXSW as “tattooed hipsters” does not help our cause. While Austin is the most liberal city in Texas by a long shot, the event started in 1987, which easily predates the renaissance in tattooing and hipsters. We’re not going to change perceptions by taking potshots. The core point of your article is far-reaching, however. If we want to change perceptions of aquaculture in North America, we shouldn’t be relying on Norwegians to make the case for it. We need a concerted industry effort to get representative speakers.

LETTER: IntraFish editor is way off base, but brings a relevant issue to the forefront

But come on, I know for a fact you all have known him as long as I have. What s his job? He’s here to get you to read IntraFish. He’s way off base, we all know it. Do you think John himself doesn’t know it as well? He does. He knows that we, as an industry, are for the most part sitting on our hands and letting big hitters be at the front line of battles that we all should be fighting shoulder-to-shoulder. Yes, in theory, we’re there. But in reality, we’re not. How many of you submitted a proposal for SXSW?
