Forth rail tunnel key to £22bn rail revolution for net zero Scotland
The Scottish Green Party is calling for £22bn to be invested in the rail network in order to deliver a modernised carbon net zero transport system in Scotland that is both affordable and accessible to all.
The Rail for All programme, based on research by Deltix Transport Consulting, calls for major changes and investment in the rail network including a £6bn Firth of Forth rail tunnel and reintegration of Network Rail (Scotland) and train operating company ScotRail.
According to Scottish Green Party transport spokesman John Finnie, the major investment is vital to overcome years of underspending, create a green recovery from Covid-19 and deliver on the government’s carbon net zero targets.
At least £20m needed to tackle drug deaths crisis, MSP says
An MSP said drug deaths were ‘off the charts’ (Paul Faith/PA)
At least £20 million is needed to tackle Scotland’s drug deaths crisis, Scottish Labour’s health spokesperson says, as MSPs debated the issue at Holyrood.
A minute’s silence was held for those who had died from drug-related issues during a virtual session of the Scottish Parliament on Thursday to discuss a motion from Monica Lennon.
Outrage over Scotland’s rising toll of drug deaths – which was revealed to be the worst in Europe – led to the resignation of public health minister Joe FitzPatrick in December.
