The government has started a process to restore ownership of a huge chunk of Wasini Island in Kwale County to a family which lost it 42 years ago following an “error” by a lands officer.
The Saggaf family has been in and out of courts to reclaim the 289 acres of land worth more than Sh1.3 billion.
Government officers in Kwale have been tasked with restarting the process of restoring ownership.
The first attempt to survey the land in Shimoni in Lunga Lunga sub-County and hand it back to the family failed on Monday after surveyors were unable to start work following a day of chaos by the residents.

Government agencies have put in place measures to ensure the safety of pedestrians and smooth shipping at the new Likoni floating footbridge in Mombasa County.
Principal Secretary for Shipping and Maritime Affairs Nancy Karigithu urged shipping lines to acknowledge that there was now a bridge at Likoni and embrace the project to ensure safety.
She made the appeal at the weekend when she toured the Sh1.9 billion bridge that was officially opened on January 1, this year.

Kambi said the fruit project has capacity to process 30 metric tonnes of mangoes a day and has already employed 100 mango collectors at the plant. The upgrading of this plant will in the long run improve farmers livelihoods and also create jobs for locals, Kambi said.
Kambi said the factory is good news for the people of Tana River who grow plenty of mangoes and other fruits but have no viable market for them.
