'Slow' Zealand: NZ Inc dithers as others move swiftly to protect manufacturing

Rick Rycroft/AP Australia is one of the countries that has moved swiftly to support its manufacturing industry. (AP Photo/Rick Rycroft) New Zealand has been caught on the back foot by rapid moves from our major trading partners to protect their manufacturing industries in the wake of Covid-19. A new report conducted by MartinJenkins and commissioned by the Wood Processors and Manufacturers Association of New Zealand (WPMA) warns we could fall even further behind unless we pick up the pace and make some decisions to grow our manufacturing capacity or ensure it doesn’t fall away. Some measures to fix the situation are on the books, but the slow pace at which they’re being considered means many of our domestic manufacturers will be at a major disadvantage for at least a year.

Was Bram Stoker's Dracula based on Jack the Ripper?

Count Dracula was inspired by one of the suspects believed to be Jack the Ripper, an author has claimed in a new book. Andy Struthers, 54, rubbishes conventional theories that Bram Stoker s vampire was based on feared Romanian ruler Vlad the Impaler and has spent 10 years researching the character s genesis.  Early research concluded it could be an Anglican priest from Devon named Sabine Baring-Gould.  But he now believes Dracula to be based on convicted criminal Francis Tumblety, who some historians believe to be Jack the Ripper.   Francis Tumblety (left) was known to have been in the Whitechapel area during the notorious spree of killings in 1888, nine years before Dracula was published. Right: Gary Oldman starring as Dracula in 1992
