Defund Police Unions, Not the Police
As a relatively new state senator, I did my best to work across the aisle.
One example is my assisting Sen. Mark Leno (D-San Francisco) in February 2016 when I coauthored one of his more ambitious bills. It was Senate Bill 1286, which addressed police officers and their records of misconduct. If approved, this legislation would have required that “personnel records and records relating to complaints against peace officers and custodial officers to be [made] available for public inspection pursuant to the California Public Records Act.”
The bill passed through the Senate Public Safety Committee with five votes; the two Republican members did not vote for the bill. At the time, Steven Greenhut of the Orange County Register opined in favor of SB 1286.

stokes can pursue his hollywood dream in the very near future. his release date is only three days away. there was a time when stephen carlstrom could almost taste freedom as well. four years ago his release was also near. i was getting out in two months. i was free to go home and live my life with my son, and it didn t turn out that way. like stokes, he was serving a short term for meth possession, but now he s facing a new charge. murder. he s pled not guilty. but carlstrom is one of nine inmates charged with the murder of john chamberlain, an orange county inmate targeted by other inmates who believed he was a child molester. i was just playing dominos in the day room when this happened, but i ve got a lot of people pointing the finger at me.
