As a retired elementary and secondary teacher, I was thrilled to read about your joint sponsorship of The Educating for Democracy Act! When I grew up, civics, history, geography were considered “core subjects.” We learned what democracy is and what it requires of us as citizens. We learned that it takes understanding and knowledge, separation of fact and opinion, participation in discussion and in voting, and in sometimes stepping up to being a political servant. We understood the depth of privilege that the Bill of Rights affords us all. Our history was told by people at that time and place (again, which needs to be updated as we become aware of our prejudices and limited perspective).
