From the Ground Up: Flower Show changes time and place

Every year, I look forward to the month of March, with both the Philadelphia Flower Show and my birthday falling in the same week. What better present than to be able to spend a day or two at the Philadelphia Convention Center, soaking up the sight of beautiful plants and intriguing landscape ideas, and learning new growing tips? This year, though, due to the pandemic, both the time and the location of the Show have been moved. The 2021 Show will be held in June. And, for the first time in the Show’s 192-year history, it will be held outdoors.

New Orleans historic architecture is uniquely suited to pandemic living

“The culture of New Orleans is one that’s lived outside. [Here] it’s not normal to sit inside,” says resident Ariana Ganak, a small business manager who twice a week works out with five friends in front of her Carrollton neighbourhood home. “We’ve been socialising like that forever, so the pandemic’s not all that different. Drive down any street, you’ll see people sitting on their front porch and on their stoop.” For travellers, examples of such architectural features are abundant, preserved within 14 historic neighbourhoods, 24 state cultural districts, and 26 National Historic Landmark designations. New Orleans is an example of how traditional solutions to promote comfort and health can work in the 21st century, as well.
