Greenwich Republican nominated to run for open Connecticut Senate seat in special election Christopher Keating, Hartford Courant Greenwich Republican Ryan Fazio won his party’s nomination Saturday in a three-town race to run for a state Senate seat being vacated by Democrat Alex Kasser. Fazio will be running in a special election Aug. 17 against Democratic attorney Alexis Gevanter after Kasser’s sudden and stunning resignation that she attributed to her long and contentious divorce from her multimillionaire husband that is headed toward trial next month. Besides his hometown of Greenwich, Fazio gained support from Republicans in Stamford and New Canaan for a seat that had been held by Republicans for nearly 90 years. But Kasser, then known as Alex Bergstein, stunned the local political world in 2018 by defeating Sen. L. Scott Frantz, one of the top Republican fundraisers in Greenwich for more than 25 years. Kasser then won again in 2020 by defeating Fazio.
