A Co Laois man was fined £500 (€578) today after he admitted trying to pay for sexual services.
In just the second case if it’s kind in Northern Ireland, Newry Magistrates Court heard that for 35-year-old John Bergin, media attention to his case “has been humiliating and degrading and a salutary lesson.”
Although Bergin, from Fassidinas New Row, Abbeyleix in Co. Laois, did not attend court personally, defence counsel Kevin O’Hare entered guilty pleas to two offences on his behalf - trying to pay for sexual services and possessing class A cocaine on 18 October last year.
A further charge of paying sexual services was not proceeded with and a prosecuting lawyer told the court how cops were alerted to report of “suspicious activity” on Monaghan Street in the city in the early hours of the morning when two women parked up in a white land rover.

This week, Year of the Young Person is focusing on music because the council wants all residents to know of the incredible young music talent in Newham, that’s growing year-on-year.
John Bergin, CEO of Newham Music, says: “Without a doubt, Newham is batting the ball right out of the field in music with just under 22,000 students taking part in music-making – this is nationally, unprecedented.”
Schools are using music as part of their recovery curriculum because it helps foster a sense of belonging and community. While lockdown has closed schools, Newham Music’s programmes have been credited by school staff as putting joy back into the school day.

John Bergin, owner of Cherry Street East in New Canaan, usually has a book filled with chicken wing orders for Super Bowl Sunday.
This year he chose not to take any orders at all. Instead, Bergin is sending any customers calling for chicken wings to other local restaurants.
