There was a time when Catherine Munn didn’t know how she could afford to live in Vancouver as a single mother. Now, she lives in a bright, airy, one-bedroom apartment in east Vancouver for which she pays about half of what market rent would be.

DALHOUSIE MILLS John Bathurst lives alone in his 200-year-old ancestral home, but he’s going to receive some help in renovating the structure’s roof.
Bathurst entered the Beacon of Hope veteran roofing contest, hoping to get enough votes to win and have his roof replaced. The first-place prize is a brand-new roof, with runner-up prizes of $2,500 each, far from the required tens of thousands of dollars he would need.

“It’s hard working alone… I was trying to put up these metal pillars, and I turned around and it hit me in the back of the head and I was knocked out – I don’t even know how long for,” recalled Bathurst about his solo repairs.
