Hastings trainer John Bary has elected to stick to his original plan and freshen Callsign Mav for a tilt at the Group 1 $200,000 BCD Sprint (1400m) at Te Rapa on February 13 before he steps him up over more ground.
The Atlante 4-year-old produced a herculean effort in lumping 63kg to a convincing win in a 1400m open sprint at Awapuni last Saturday, giving Bary good reason to consider running the horse in the Group 1 $200,000 Thorndon Mile (1600m) at Trentham on January 30.

Mongolian Wings gets the perfect chance at Ellerslie to take a small step down the path that led his father to greatness.
The 3-year-old will try to make it three wins on end in the $50,000 Te Akau Gingernuts Salver at Ellerslie; the 2100m event the next race on the path to the Vodafone Derby, also at Ellerslie, on March 6.
Mongolian Wings sire Mongolian Khan not only won that Derby but also the ATC Derby in Sydney as a 3-year-old before capturing the Caulfield Cup as a 4-year-old, making him one of the great modern Kiwi stayers. His son has a long way to go to equal dad but has started in the right fashion.

Trainer John Bary has an addition to one of racing s oldest sayings and punters should take note before backing the best horse racing at Awapuni tomorrow. Everybody in racing knows weight can stop a train, says Bary, and I think it can even stop a bullet train.
The bullet train in question is Bary s Group 1 winner Callsign Mav and the weight in question is the 63kg he will be asked to carry in the open handicap over 1400m.

It has been a long time between celebratory drinks for Waipukurau thoroughbred owner-breeders Peter and Ann Evans but they were back in the winners circle at Hastings on New Year s Day.
The couple bred and share in the ownership of Bold Iris, who capped off two good minor placings with a deserved maiden success in a 3-year-old maiden race over 1200m.
“We were thrilled with his trial at Taupō. He wasn’t going to trial there, but we snuck that one in, which was good. “We were going to trial at Foxton the other day, but it was a heavy10, so he did an exhibition gallop at Hastings, which was pleasing. “He had been down to Waipukurau and galloped in company with Miss Labasa, so we have kept it up to him. “Once he was in the paddock after the second day at Hastings we just thought ‘where’s next?’. “His main aim is this race and then we are looking at Te Rapa in February (Gr1 BCD Group Sprint, 1400m) and then the Haunui Farm WFA (Gr1, 1600m) two weeks later. We will decide after Saturday if we need a run in January.”
