Christopher Plummer was the kind of star who seemed to underpin every movie he made. If you tried to imagine one of them without him, it wasn’t clear if the rest of the enterprise would remain standing up.
The Canadian actor, who died today aged 91, started out on Broadway and on television, though just before he turned 30, Sidney Lumet gave him his cinematic break in Stage Struck, a 1958 theatreland drama, in which he played a handsome young playwright on the rise.
