To say that there’s more than meets the eye when observing the artwork of Baseera Khan would be an understatement. Deep within the materials Khan uses in multidisciplinary projects are both inner explorations and experiences with and within a complex world. “I think about material and its production and infrastructure and how it influences economies,” said Khan, who is the current artist-in-residence at Lux Art Institute in Encinitas and whose works are on exhibit there through June 5. Khan said of the creative process: “I think about some geopolitical things, some historical timelines, and then I hone in on the material based on how it actually creates identity.”

New York Stage and Film Commits $100,000 to Support Artists with NEXUS Initiative New York Stage and Film, considered “one of the preeminent incubators for theater in the country,” has committed $100,000 to their new NEXUS Initiative that brings together 20 multi-hyphenate artists to explore the question “where does story exist at the intersection of stage and film?” Through this inaugural program, NYSAF will offer direct support to these artists – each participant receives $5,000 and will take part in a series of conversations focused on the needs of new and expanded forms of storytelling that resonate with our time. Actor, writer Richard Montoya discusses Berkeley s affecting legacy

There’s no shortage of things that Richard Montoya loves about Bay Area culture the Mission District, Carlos Santana, the Golden State Warriors. Perhaps most striking for Montoya is the East Bay’s artistic forebears: poets like Joaquin Miller, Diane de Prima and Montoya’s father José Montoya, whose works are informed by their time in Oakland, San Francisco and Berkeley. “It’s really those golden gates that kick us off into a rich California legacy that has to do with the West, our literature,” Montoya said in an interview with The Daily Californian. “I am about unpacking moments in our history that show precisely when Ginsberg and the Chicanos were hanging out, (or) when Ferlinghetti and my dad appeared in the same anthology.”
