End of Year Roster Overview: Defense & Special Teams

Part II here was split off from Part I: The Offense because the defensive attrition was coming fast and furious. Since that post Villari and Filiaga have entered the portal. As for the defense/special teams: Played out eligibility: Brad Hawkins, Jordan Whittley, Elijah Pierre. In the portal: Anthony Solomon, Darion Green-Warren, Andre Seldon, George Johnson III. NFL Departures: Aidan Hutchinson, David Ojabo, Daxton Hill, Chris Hinton, Vincent Gray. Awaiting NFL decisions: Josh Ross, Jake Moody, Brad Robbins. Other grads with a 6th year option: Jess Speight, Donovan Jeter. Grads with 2 years left: Julius Welschof, Joey George, Taylor Upshaw, Michael Barrett, Gemon and German Green.  Indicated in November they intend to be back: The Greens. Michigan also lost DL coach Shaun Nua to the same job at USC. I’m expecting Ross and Moody at least to depart for the pros, and we’re probably not done with attrition from positions where younger guys have passed older ones. Hinton was a surpri

Exit Chris Hinton to the NFL

This one is out of the blue: next chapter pic.twitter.com/iHgRw87Mnv Christopher Hinton (@Thechrishinton) January 5, 2022 While Hinton was a borderline five-star as a recruit, his grading here and to Pro Football Focus were in line with a decent Big Ten starter, not an early NFL entry. He had two years of eligibility remaining after playing three years at Michigan. That third year was a doozy, however. Hinton improved dramatically over the last offseason after showing merely flashes of the touted recruit in his first two campaigns. That emergence played a major role in the team’s success this season that was every bit as surprising as this decision. It’s possible that position coach Shaun Nua’s departure had something to do with this, but the far more likely explanation is Hinton is the son of an NFL player, was a Top-50 recruit out of Georgia three years ago, and always wanted to get to the League as soon as possible. A strong finish to the 2021 season probably pushed his draf

Idea: Barrett as FB?

After listening to the podcast and reading Brian's game column, it sounds like Michigan could benefit from having a fullback. I wonder if they would consider (and if he'd be interested) in trying Michael Barrett out as a situational fullback? He was a dual threat QB in high school, they've trusted him to handle the ball on fake punts and kick returns and he obviously is good at drilling people. If he's a man without a position on defense now, maybe it's worth a look on offense.

What Would It Take - Defensive Line

Submitted by blue in dc on July 25th, 2021 at 4:50 PM What Would It Take - Interior Defensive Line I have been accused of being a bit too verbose in these previews.   I could make this one much shorter.    What will it take to make this year’s interior defensive line good?   A miracle.  If my other posts have been too long, this is an appropriate place to stop reading.   If you want more detail, here goes. In a position group where we need three starters and would ideally have three solid  backups, it is hard to name more than 2 players who inspire any real level of confidence.   If you include Jessie Speight and  Jordan Whitley, you can eke together 11 games of starting experience.
