No further details of their arrest were immediately available. They were arrested in Kalangala in central Uganda, Wine said in the post. Joel Senyonyi, spokesman for Wine s party, the National Unity Platform, said: Yes police has arrested him together with his whole campaign team. They (police) put them in police trucks and started driving, but we don t know where they are taking them.

Bobi Wine detained again in Uganda

UGANDAN presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, was arrested again later on Wednesday amid accusations that he breached coronavirus restrictions. National Unity Platform party spokesman Joel Senyonyi said: “Police have arrested him together with his whole campaign team. They put them in police trucks and started driving but we don’t know where they are taking them.” Police were accused of firing tear gas at crowds who protested against his arrest in Uganda’s central Kalangala region.  One supporter said: “They are firing even now to disperse people gathering on roads.” Police denied the allegations, accusing the crowds of attacking police vehicles, letting down tyres and inciting violence.

This is the third time Wine has been arrested since launching his campaign to unseat President Yoweri Museveni.  Kalangala is not one of the districts where campaigns were banned, said Joel Senyonyi, spokesperson of Wine s National Unity Platform party or NUP. So, he went to campaign, but to his shock when he got there, the military surrounded him and arrested the entire team, 90 of them. Took them to different places. We understand he s being airlifted, we don t know to where.

Wine, a popular musician whose real name is Robert Kyagulanyi, was taken to the capital Kampala in a military helicopter. Members of his campaign team were also detained. Police accused Wine of breaching a campaigning ban, ostensibly introduced because of the coronavirus pandemic, but the district he was campaigning in wasn’t covered by the ban. As news of Wine’s arrest spread, there were reports of protests and police using teargas against demonstrators.
