The Grand Forks County Sheriff s Office s use of the program has ticked up significantly in the past year. 7:00 am, May 19, 2021 × Grand Forks County Sheriff s Office The Grand Forks County Sheriff s Office has acquired nearly 200 pieces of used equipment since the beginning of the year through a federal program that allows local law enforcement to purchase excess military equipment from the Pentagon at an extremely reduced price. As of April, the sheriff s office has purchased 198 pieces of discounted night vision equipment, as well as an unmanned ground vehicle. Among the equipment are night vision goggles, infrared illuminators, night vision image intensifier tubes, a reflex sight, a flashlight and more.

In 2020, calls reporting suspicious activity also increased significantly. One Sheriff s Office captain said he s unsure what s causing the increase. 7:00 am, May 12, 2021 × Grand Forks County Sheriff s Office The Grand Forks County Sheriff s Office reported an increase in suspicious activity and scam phone calls in 2020, according to the department s 2020 annual crime statistics report, released this month. According to the report, sheriff s deputies received 646 calls reporting suspicious activity – which can range from an unknown person or vehicle to objects out of place – in 2020, up from 373 calls in 2019, and up from 149 in 2017, when the department started tracking those calls.
