A human rights group has warned of more attacks on activists and dissidents following the series of arrests on a female journalist and six union organizers on Human Rights Day last Thursday.
In a statement, Karapatan said the Duterte administration will “stop at nothing to bare its fangs” against human rights defenders, trade unionists, and critics as part of its intensified crackdown on all forms of dissent.
Police arrested journalist Lady Ann Salem of Manila Today and labor organizers Mark Ryan Cruz, Romina Astudillo, Jaymie Gregorio, Dennise Velasco, Joel Demate, and Rodrigo Esparago.
They were arrested in simultaneous raids in Quezon City, Mandaluyong City, and Manila based on five search warrants issued by Quezon City Executive Judge Cecilyn Burgos-Villavert.

On International Human Rights Day, one journalist, 6 activists arrested in separate raids

MANILA Impunity reared its ugly head as elements of the police arrested one journalist and six activists in four separate incidents of raid this morning, December 10.
At around 3 a.m., elements of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) searched the house of couple Dennise Velasco and Diane Zapata in Fairview, Quezon City. Zapata told
Bulatlat the CIDG asked them to drop to the floor facing down. After more than one hour, firearms and explosives were found inside the couple’s home, which Zapata maintained were all planted. Velasco is now in the custody of the Philippine National Police at Camp Karingal.
