Council rejects Dollar General store proposal

David Colburn ORR - Developers of a proposed Dollar General store in Orr experienced a setback on Monday as the Orr City Council denied two requests for zoning permits and a building permit, but they remained committed to finding a way to move forward with the store. The action came after a roughly 45-minute public comment session punctuated by terse and sometimes contentious exchanges between those in favor of the development and those opposed. Council members scheduled the public meeting after choosing at their June 14 meeting to postpone acting on the requests presented at that time, and about 20 people were present at the Monday meeting, although only a few chose to speak.

David Colburn ORR- A late addition to Monday’s Orr City Council agenda brought welcome news – the plans for replacing the badly deteriorating Mickey Elverum Bog Walk are complete and the nearly $400,000 project will be put out for bids for a contractor within the next week. Alan Johnson, president of Benchmark Engineering, came to the meeting with schematic drawings and a bid packet for the council to review and provide feedback, the results of the city’s $10,000 initial investment in the project. A $196,000 grant from the Iron Range Resources and Rehabilitation Board and a $186,000 Outdoor Recreation grant from the Department of Natural Resources will cover the costs of construction.
