Sen Jim Inhofe, James Lankford oppose Deb Haaland over energy policy

Oklahoman Despite the historic nature of Deb Haaland’s nomination to head the Interior Department and strong support from Oklahoma tribes, both Oklahoma senators voted not to confirm the first Native American cabinet secretary because of her views on fossil fuels. Sens. Jim Inhofe and James Lankford both cited Haaland’s positions on energy production as the reason for their opposition, as did many other Republicans. Cherokee Nation Principal Chief Chuck Hoskin Jr. hailed the confirmation and said the appointment of a Native American to the position was long overdue. Haaland, a member of the Laguna Pueblo tribe and a former New Mexico congresswoman, was confirmed by the Senate on Monday by a vote of 51-40, with support from only four Republicans. President Joe Biden on Tuesday signed the commission of appointment making Haaland Secretary of Interior.
