County Board Chair Jim Nieman and representatives from Lake Land College will join Abbott EMS for the graduation of its inaugural “Earn While You Learn” academy in Effingham. The celebration comes as part of National EMS Week, which recognizes the important contributions of Emergency Medical Service professionals.
Abbott, a subsidiary of American Medical Response and part of the Global Medical Response family of companies, launched the award-winning Earn While You Learn program as a way to ease the financial transition for those wanting to become EMS professionals. The innovative program allows for paid on-the-job training while taking the necessary certification courses to become Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs). CREVE COEUR â This time, Mercy Hospital Washington was the one facing the most trouble.
Its intensive care unit was full â âand they are eight nurses down,â Robyn Weilbacher, chief nursing officer for Mercyâs eastern Missouri region, told about 60 hospital leaders Wednesday during an early morning online conference.
Theyâve been meeting daily since mid-November, when COVID-19 patient numbers began to swell into dangerous territory, to address capacity and staffing issues in the Mercy system.
Kellie Meehan, regional director of nursing logistics, was leading Wednesdayâs meeting. She urged everyone to do what they could to make room as they attempted to transfer some of Washingtonâs 13 intensive care patients to other hospitals and offer relief. An emergency could come through the hospitalâs doors at any moment.
