What’s in a name? History, representation, resilience
The impact of Joseph & Lucretia Brown in Marblehead

Now that the town has decided to name its new elementary school after freed slave Joseph Brown and his wife, Lucretia, the Marblehead Racial Justice Team hopes it will lead to more education and awareness about residents of color and their role in the town’s history.
“What’s exciting about this is our future,” said Rev. Jim Bixby, with the MRJT. “It’s a charge for educators and administrators to help our kids access this history, through curriculum and projects. It’s a story of resilience. It connects us to our revolutionary past and our entrepreneurial past. Our students of color will also see themselves represented.”
