A 50-year-old Holden has been sentenced to a decade in jail after he changed his plea in Carroll County Court.
Danny Joe Darnell was arrested following a call to the Carroll County Police Department, on August 31, which stated a truck had struck a fence and left the scene of the crash. A short time later, it was reported that the same truck had struck a Carrollton Fire Department vehicle that was parked on the sidewalk. The driver then struck a fire hyrdrant and nearly hit a patrol vehicle before leading law enforcement on a high-speed pursuit. Darnell was arrested after he pulled into a parking lot before an officer trapped his truck against a wall.
If enacted, the state legislation would align the minimum age requirement with federal law.
The bill also would impose a state tax on electronic smoking products, or e-cigarettes, for the first time in Alaska. The Fairbanks City Council turned down a municipal tax on e-cigarettes, but other local governments in Alaska tax e-cigarettes, including Anchorage and Juneau.
The proposed statewide tax would be at the same rate as it is for other tobacco products in Alaska, yielding an estimated $2.5 million in revenue, according to Rep. Sara Hannan, the House sponsor.Â
The bill also would prohibit internet sales of e-cigarettes.
âThe last time we touched tobacco taxes was 17 years ago,â said Hannan, in a House Finance Committee meeting Wednesday. âVaping was not broadly used then. It is similar to other tobacco products, but it is not taxed.â

The newest batch of Hallmark movies continues to be ushered in on the network, with the premiere of “A Winter Getaway,” starring Brooks Darnell and Nazneen Contractor.
Fans will be in for a treat with the film, as they may be somewhat familiar with both Darnell and Contractor. Darnell previously held a role in the Hallmark Channel film “All Yours” and starred in Hallmark Movies & Mysteries’ “A Christmas Miracle,” but has also had roles in Lifetime’s “Let’s Meet Again On Christmas Eve,” and starred as Dr. Nate Hastings on “The Young and the Restless” and Charlie on “Shadowhunters.”
