Biden selects Wendy Sherman for No 2 State Department post

She also previously had stints as a counselor at the State Department and assistant secretary of State for legislative affairs.  She is currently the director of the Center for Public Leadership at the Harvard Kennedy School and a senior counselor at the Albright Stonebridge Group. Manchin: Removing Hawley, Cruz with 14th Amendment should be a consideration

Speaking to PBS’s “Firing Line” on Friday night, Manchin said the Senate should explore the option after a violent mob, riled up by President Trump “That should be a consideration,” Manchin responded when asked if the 14th Amendment should be triggered. “He understands that. Ted’s a very bright individual, and I get along fine with Ted, but what he did was totally outside of the realm of our responsibilities or our privileges.” ADVERTISEMENT The third section of the 14th Amendment reads that no lawmaker holding office “shall have engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the same, or given aid or comfort to the enemies thereof. But Congress may by a vote of two-thirds of each House, remove such disability.”

For Joe Biden, an experienced foreign policy team

Each of these individuals gained an early reputation for competence and collegiality. Nuland, a career Foreign Service officer, went on to serve in the Bush administration as foreign policy adviser to Vice President Dick Cheney. Blinken went to work for Sen. Biden on the Foreign Relations Committee, while Sherman joined former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright s consultancy.  ADVERTISEMENT This pattern is a familiar one. The politically connected come and go with the electoral tides. The career staff labor on from one administration to the next until, four or eight years later, the tide turns and some familiar faces reappear, often reentering government one or two steps above where they left.

Sunday shows preview: Washington prepares for an inauguration and impeachment; coronavirus surges across the US

All eyes are on Washington, D.C., this week as security officials and law enforcement prepare for Wednesday’s inaugural ceremonies in the aftermath of the deadly Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol.  The FBI has warned of planned protests that have the potential to turn violent in the days surrounding the inauguration, prompting the closure of major Metro stations around the National Mall and Capitol building. Amtrak has also announced that it is suspending some service south of D.C. The National Park Service on Friday announced it would temporarily close most parts of the National Mall to restrict the number of people allowed in the area.

Ocasio-Cortez: Facebook, Zuckerberg partially responsible for insurrection

In her monthly livestream town hall for constituents, the progressive congresswoman said that while Facebook is “trying to do as much damage control as possible” following the mob attack by removing accounts posting false information about the 2020 election, which served as the basis for the violent demonstration, Ocasio-Cortez said the effects of online misinformation were “coming for a long time.”  “I believe that this is directly connected to the complete lack of accountability that monopolies like Facebook have to democracy,” the New York representative said in the virtual event, adding that the social media giant “knew” there was misinformation on its platform and “allowed it” anyway.
