Central PA Food Bank s Virtual Food Drives are a new, safe way to help those in need across the region
Every dollar raised through the Virtual Food Drive will help the Food Bank distribute more than six healthy meals to those in need in Central PA, the Food Bank said.

HARRISBURG, Pa. The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank is reminding potential donors of its Virtual Food Drive, a new way for the organization to raise funds.
Launched late last year, the Virtual Food Drive is an online tool that allows individuals and organizations to raise funds to help the Food Bank purchase and distribute large quantities of fresh, nutritious and shelf stable healthy foods at deeply reduced rates, the organization said.

BUT WHO WAS HE?
Wambali Mkandawire was a Malawian jazz and Traditional Beat musician.
He was born in the Congo to Malawian parents from the Mlowe village in the north and then later lived in Mzuzu. He wanted to become a musician but his grandparents were against the idea since he was still a student. When he dropped out of school in the 1970s he put his efforts into music.

With the loss of income due to the pandemic, the issue of food insecurity for state residents has drastically increased and doesn’t show signs of abating, according to Russell Redding, the state’s Secretary of Agriculture.
“It’s been devastating at one point, just to look at it and know that in a normal year, we had roughly 1.4 million people that were food insecure. That number has been two million plus,” Redding said, referring to the increase during the pandemic.
“We have served about 20 million individuals since late March at our food banks. That’s an average of 500,000 a week and that is continuing,” he added.

The funds will be used to help support the Food Bank s pantry programs in Perry County, the organization said.

PERRY COUNTY, Pa. The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank announced it has received a $100,000 gift from the Partnership for Better Health to support its pantry programs in Perry County.
Prior to the COVID-19 crisis, nearly 15 percent of children in Perry County were food insecure, meaning they do not have reliable access to three healthy meals every day, the Food Bank said. Due to the economic consequences of the pandemic, that number is now at nearly 20 percent.
