For the past six months, a team of security guards and outreach workers has been patrolling Edmonton's downtown in a bid by area businesses to deal with safety concerns that have lingered since the pandemic.
Each team is made up of a security guard from Backwoods Security, a company owned by Alexis Nakota Sioux Nation and a peer support worker from Hiregood.
Edmontonians will not have any new permanent public washroom options this summer, but the city is rolling out some trailer facilities as it studies how and where it s best to build new bathrooms.
Alongside plans to replace current porta-potty toilets with trailers, and provide facilities at 10 more locations from May to October 2022, city officials also want to expand the washroom attendant program.
