the recovery hit a speed bump with the latest report. employers added 162,000 jobs last month. that s below expectations. the 81 employment rate ticked down. christine romans is here to break it down. victor and brianna, we ve taken 32 pages of jobs reports and condensed it here. we see unemployment rate, 4 1/2-year low. 7.4%. jobs created, 162,000. not what we ve seen for the average for the year but it is enough to help keep inching that jobless rate lower. and the recession, millions of jobs lost, trying to recover those. and this year, want to see more than 200,000 on a consistent basis. this isn t enough to even the unemployment rate. who are the important things. retail job, 46,000 of those. leisure and hospitality, 23,000
market. we have to have an economy and labor market working for everyone. you saw the fast-food protesters in the streets. a lot of people have been sidelined by this labor market. we want to keep moving forward. we re glad to see the progress we are. we need more and better paying jobs. christine romans, thanks. i want to talk more about that and take a deeper dive on the jobs reports. and we join alan kruger, at the white house this morning. good morning. good morning. car sales are up, home prices are up, jobs are edging back and ben bernanke downgrades our growth to just modest after the fed meeting. what s going on here? is the economy getting better or not? i think it s clear the economy is gradually getting better but we d like to speed up the pace of the improvement. over the last three months we
a parallel discussion going on in the senate. kristen gillibrand trying to do the same thing you are, take the prosecution of these crimes from the chain of command. the senate is very divided. this time, it s not not along party lines. how do you see this breaking down politically? we are seeing growing support among our republican colleagues on taking it out of the chain of command and that is the good news. on the house side, the letter i ve written to the chair is to just get us to have a hearing on chain of command so that the issue can be aired on the house side. they have really shut down the opportunity for a robust discussion, debate, and exploration of the issue. and i m hoping now, as we garner more support on the republican side in this letter, that we will see the chair take the action to hold a hearing on the issue. congresswoman jackie spear, thank you joining us. today s mixed jobs reports
