trade dispute is affecting u.s. companies even better, because second quarter earnings season ramps up next week. that s when we will really hear from the company ceos as they report the earnings out how the trade battle, how this trade dispute which has been ongoing for months now, how it s affecting u.s. companies. that s going to be something to look for. today, we did get the monthly jobs report. what do the numbers tell us about the strength of the economy as of right now? reporter: it shows the jobs picture is continues to be bright. 213,000 jobs were created in june. unemployment rate did go up to 4% but for a positive reason, for a good reason because a half million people came off the sidelines, jumped back into the labor force to look for work. the bad news of the jobs report, especially if you are an american worker, is wages are flat. in fact, they are running below inflation. that s probably why you are seeing a lot of americans say, i m not feeling rich.
coming to the united states and seeking asylum are in some way hurting our communities? when we look at the jobs picture, we have full employment. i spoke to the mayor of the town who said we need the migrants to work on our shrimp boats. we hear narratives out there that these are criminals coming and gang members. the more people i speak to here, they re saying they re migrants looking for a better opportunity, and we have the opportunities here. exactly. i think there s a lot of evidence that talks about how our economy is stronger with immigration, and also communities are safer, that immigrants are less likely to commit crimes when they re here living in our communities. it s much better for us to process people, listen to their stories, so they can get on a path to some sort of legalization and citizenship so we know who they are and they can be integrated into our communities. lorenzo, you live here. is it a contentious relationship
mine s father who owns a vineyard in oregon and he was saying how he wanted to get american college kids to work at his vineyard so he offered $50 an hour. not one kid signed up for it. he was forced to get the farm labor that wasostly that he didn t check their immigration status because they re the only ones willing to work these jobs. i don t understand howhe president could say we re up full employment, everything is great, the jobs picture is rosy and at the same time say immigrants are stealing our jobs. i want to share what former cia director michael hayden said in a tweet. an image evoking nazi concentration camp. this morning, he said this tweet was meant to be a warning as to where we could be headed. it s really important that we don t go too over the top. we don t want to go too far. but is this warning valid? because for me, i can t understand the purpose of this policy and who it serves. stephanie, this all you
one, that this is a low. it s not a law. it s their policy. and the other is the democrats did it. you wait for him eventually to blame romaine lettuce on the democrats in this country. and as for this lightweight attorney general we have, what bible is he talking about that, god ordained this government? this government? on what planet? okay then. evan, let s put ourselves in the mind of the forgotten american. the forgotten american is president trump s base. many people say he s playing to his base. if i was someone who globalization hit, if my town lost its factory, if i lost my job, how does this help me? because the president is saying we ve got a perfect jobs picture. everybody s back to work. how is it that everybody s back to work if migrants are stealing our jobs? and if we are detaining mothers and children, think about how much that costs. imagine if that money went to a workforce development program in
through college. you absolutely do. what else do you have on the show today? reporter: we re going to get around to some of those movers. i talked about disney s whoas, we have jobs coming up, we ll talk about that. and get all the latest. what is the expectation on jobs, the next report? the things that have been trending. reporter: it s the one thing the president can tout. the jobs picture is good. we ll see if the wages catch up. so good news for economy, we think. but watch out, in this environment, good news can be bad news if it means the feds will raise interest rates. so we could see a counterintuitive reaction. somebody in the middle will be best for everyone around. but the jobs picture is good, making the u.s. look really attractive, especially when you look at the international concerns. thanks, maggie. coming up, president trump launches a new attack on his attorney general, as the special counsel is looking into trump s
