SRINAGAR: Five people, including one person impersonating as an Army Colonel, were charge-sheeted by the Economic Offences Wing of the Crime Branch Jammu (CBJ) today for allegedly orchestrating a job fraud of Rs 67 lakh.
All six victims of fake part-time online jobs scam were enticed by offers such as subscribing to YouTube channels, managing an online trading platform, and reviewing restaurants on Google Maps, with promises of high payments. Unfortunately, they ended up losing significant amounts of money to the fraudsters in just one month.
According to the police’s report, “significant alarm is warranted due to the rise in the number of government workers falling prey to such schemes. One government employee complained in 2022, but by 2023 there were 12 complaints, which highlights the severity of the fraud.” Rs 9.58 crore has been swindled in 2023 alone.
