The recently rebuilt Crab Cooker Restaurant and Fish Market will officially throw open its doors to welcome guests back to the landmark Newport Beach eatery at 11 a.m. on Monday.
Located at 2200 Newport Blvd., the Crab Cooker first started serving customers 70 years ago. Its former building was heavily damaged by nearby construction, so the owner, Jim Wasko, son-in-law of founder Bob Roubian (1926 – 2017), took it down and started all over again recreating it.
“We have gone to painstaking detail to preserve the look, feel and even the décor,” Wasko said in a news release issued Friday. “When we reopen return visitors will feel right at home and new visitors will feel as if they did not miss a thing.”

know it’s officially spring and we’re all pounding on nursery doors, anxious to plant some California native milkweed to help the endangered Western monarch butterfly stay afloat since,
yes, milkweed is the only thing its caterpillars will eat and nonnative varieties appear to be hastening its demise.
But here’s the thing: native milkweeds are still slowly coming back to life.
Native milkweeds especially narrow-leaf milkweed, the most prominent variety in California are just now emerging from dormancy, a normal, natural thing that won’t be hurried no matter how we plead, said Patty Roess, manager of the retail portion of the Tree of Life Nursery in San Juan Capistrano, one of Southern California’s premier growers of native plants. “We’ve tried growing native milkweed in different conditions and it’s the same. You can’t change what the plant wants to be: a summer bloomer that goes dormant in midwinter.”

For this exhibit, artists Dennis Delgado, Alicia Henry, Kenyatta A.C. Hinkle, Titus Kaphar, Whitfield Lovell, and Lava Thomas created unexpected and unconventional depictions of Black subjects through drawings, performance art, prints, sculptures, and digital art that challenge traditional methods of portraiture. All of the works will be available for viewing through a virtual tour, and all related performances and lectures will be prerecorded and shared through the college’s website.

SMETANA TRIO
Originally founded in 1934, this piano trio has long been recognized as the top chamber ensemble from the Czech Republic. The current group with Jan Talich on violin, Jan Pálenícek on cello, and Jitka Cechová on piano has performed across the world and recorded 11 albums. The musicians will perform works by Beethoven, Dvorák, and Novák.
