(Mugshot via Will County Jail ) JOLIET, IL On Wednesday morning, 76-year-old Minnesota resident Barry Whelpley appeared over a video monitor from the Will County Jail for his first court appearance in connection with the 1972 slaying of Naperville teenager Julie Hanson. The Will County State s Attorney s Office of Jim Glasgow has charged Whelpley, who has been living in Mounds View, Minnesota, with three counts of first-degree murder. Wednesday s court hearing was short. Will County Circuit Judge David Carlson appointed the Will County Public Defender s Office to serve as Whelpley s lawyers for now. It s possible that Whelpley will hire a private practice law firm to represent him in the coming days.
