considerable amount of time studying medicare and medicaid. signed into law in 1965 by lyndon johnson. take us back to that time period and how this legislation was significant at the time and how it has evolved. george: that s a great question to start off with. medicare and medicaid passed in july 1965. medicaid was really an afterthought in the legislative drafting process. the law s ratification shortly after the assassination of president john f. kennedy meant that there was a greater focus on the medicare law and there were certain historical reasons for this. grew out inan and 1960 which also grew out of the medical aid for a program, which was a new deal era program that began in the 40 s and 50 s. for that reason most policymakers and legislators were focused on delivering medical assistance public insurance options for the elderly who were at risk of bankruptcy and high cost from end-of-life care. so when medicaid was appended to the law it was seen as a way to exte

knowledge, sophistication, and style. as your biographical packets enumerate, they have individually and together and livened into the literature over the years. gary gallagher is a professor emeritus in the history of the american civil war at the university of virginia and he is former director of the now civil war center there. you are all familiar with his major works, the confederate war, the union war, lee and his generals in war and memory. he is also, like me and many in this room, and aficionado, but more, an expert on civil war themed films. his passion has inspired a terrific 2008 book, how hollywood and popular art shape what we know about the civil war. he is the co-editor that just published new perspectives on the union war. joan waugh is a professor of american history at ucla and the author of such books as the memory of the civil war in on and the simplye u.s. grant american hero, american myth. working together, they have not only cohosted important and in

1850 was also the year that a compromise was forged, the last great compromise, they didnt know it then, but we know it now, that saved the union. It was a compromise forged by the north and south that involved a number of major changes to the way territories good to come to the United States involving passage of the fugitive slave act and other compromises that neither side was happy about, but it did preserve the union for the tumultuous decade to come.
