Historic Fairbanks locomotive undergoes boiler repairs Alex Bengel
FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) - Locomotive Number 1 at Pioneer Park is undergoing maintenance this week.
Joan Skilbred, Risk Management Officer with Friends of the Tanana Valley Railroad, discussed the locomotive, saying, “It’s the oldest operating locomotive, steam locomotive, in Alaska and the Yukon. It’s 122 years old this summer.”
She explained, “We have to replace the tubes in the boiler. They don’t last forever, and we had a couple of them that were going. They were getting a lot of wear on them.”
“We decided that we should go ahead and replace all of them,” she added.
