Sault artist: ‘Creating beauty softens the rough edges of life’

Phyllis Bigelow, a Chippewa County native, has been expressing her passion for rug hooking and stained glass art for 40 years.
Bigelow is from a long line of Chippewa County residents since her maternal great grandparents, from Ontario, were some of the first homesteaders of Bruce Township in the late 1870s. Bigelow received a bachelor of arts degree with a secondary teaching certificate from Lake Superior State University and spent many years teaching in the Sault Area Schools.
“I was always interested in art and architecture, color and design, although I have never studied any of it formally,” said Bigelow. “I remember loving art back in grade school and I always scored high on interest tests in school. I believe our passions are with us from early childhood.”
