Helmets. Flak jackets. Press identification. Those are some of the tools that journalists covering the Israel-Hamas war are using to shield themselves from the unforgiving dangers of an active battlefield. But the gear only goes so far.

The Correspondent, the English-language sister site to the Dutch news site De Correspondent, is closing down, Nieman Lab reported Thursday. The website had pitched itself as an “antidote to the daily news grind,” and promised “to redefine what news is about, shifting the focus from the sensational to the foundational.”
The Correspondent launched in September 2019, following a stunning crowdfunding campaign that raised $2.6 million from 45,888 supporters in its one month campaign at the end of 2018 – a world record for the number of backers in a journalism crowdfunding campaign (the previous record was held by De Correspondent, in 2013).
