JN.1 coronavirus strain detected in Kerala. Health authorities say the Omicron subvariant isn't causing severe illness, but the situation is being monitored closely.
In a letter to the health secretaries of all states, the Union Ministry of Health asked the states to report and monitor district-wise SARI and ILI cases regularly.
The variant, which was already spreading to other countries like China and the US, was discovered in a Kerala woman, as part of the Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium's routine surveillance program.
