Though it was forgotten later after Jiri Prochazka delivered one of the best knockouts of the year, in the prelims of UFC Vegas 25, there was a bout steeped in controversy.
In the main fight on the prelims, Randa Markos took on Luana Pinheiro in a pivotal bout for Markos’s career. Markos had lost four of her last five bouts and was likely in the position where a loss would mean the end of her UFC run. As such, Markos came out with a lot of intensity, and even after suffering a cut to her eyelid early in the first round, “Quiet Storm” made no bones about wanting to continue the fight. Unfortunately for her, things went south shortly after referee Mark Smith restarted the round.

Prochazka is definitely deserving of fighting for the belt after beating Reyes and Oezdemir in impressive fashion in his first two UFC fights, but as he said himself, he is still behind Glover Teixeira when it comes to the UFC light heavyweight title shot pecking order. Teixeira has won five straight fights and after he submitted Thiago Santos last year he was told he would get the next title shot. Teixeira was forced to wait for Israel Adesanya to move up in weight in his failed bid to win a second UFC title, but now that the division is opened up again, Teixeira is the next man in line, and Prochazka is the next man after.
The controversial moment came after both fighters went to the ground. Markos, on her back, caught Pinheiro, who was on her knees, with an up-kick to the face. Referee Mark Smith immediately halted the fight with the stunned Brazilian on her back.
The 35-year-old from Windsor, Ont., immediately held out her hand as an apology. Because the Brazilian was on her knees, she was considered a downed opponent and as such the kick was illegal.
The fight was the featured bout on the undercard prior to the main card at the UFC s Apex production facility. The main event pitted Dominick (The Devastator) Reyes, ranked third among light-heavyweight contenders, against No 5 Jiri (Denisa) Prochazka of the Czech Republic.
