After having to cancel the 2020 spring sports season following the COVID-19 outbreak, the MIAA said it wanted to make sure to give spring student-athletes the best possible experience this year.
The MIAA Board of Directors (BOD) unanimously voted Friday to officially implement sectional tournaments this spring.
The vote comes on the heels of the MIAA Tournament Management Committee (TMC) voting in a plan on how the tournament would be set up earlier this week.
“It’s exciting. I was hoping to have some sort of tournament to participate in,” Turners Falls softball coach Gary Mullins said. “I was optimistic it was going to happen. With it being an abbreviated season, it’s nice to have something to play for at the end of it.”

The MIAA Tournament Management Committee (TMC) met Wednesday morning, the main topics on the agenda being Fall II tournaments, the possibility of spring tournaments, and the power ratings system.
Following a brief discussion, St. Mary’s (Lynn) athletic director Jeff Newhall proposed a motion that there will be no MIAA-sanctioned postseason tournaments for the Fall II season. The TMC proceeded to vote unanimously – 16-0 – in favor of that motion, meaning there will officially be no MIAA-sanctioned postseason tournaments for the Fall II season.
“At this point, with the number of COVID cases out there and issues going on with the winter season, this is certainly the right move,” Wellesley athletic director John Brown said by phone following the meeting. “The point right now is to get the Fall II season started and get as many contests as you can for teams. If you have a tournament, that’s cutting off games at the end of the season for the kids.
MIAA’s TMC says no to Fall II postseason, yes to new power rating system

Two major votes passed through the MIAA Tournament Management Committee (TMC) during a virtual meeting on Wednesday.
The first article voted on was whether to have postseason tournaments for the new Fall II season, with the TMC voting unanimously, 16-0, to not have any sanctioned MIAA tournaments.
The vote mostly pertains to football, the lone sport that was moved statewide from Fall I to Fall II. Soccer and volleyball are expected to be offered during the Fall II season in Franklin County, but since other parts of the state played those sports in the fall, it was already voted to not hold statewide postseason tournaments in those sports.
