Flagler Beach has a powerfully 1950s vibe

Nosing through the Flagler Surf Art & Stuff boutique, I couldn’t fail to notice its T-shirt-driven message. “Please don’t make me cross the bridge”, pleaded the slogan, which clearly resonated with the boutique’s customers, judging by the variety of ways it was displayed. The entreaty is both heartfelt and significant here in Flagler Beach, where time slows down and is very much pre-Disney. This is Old Florida: the slower, simpler kind that has yet to welcome mass tourism.
Instead of Starbucks, there is Yes Coffee Co; in place of McDonald’s, there is Whaam Burger; and instead of fancy high-rise resorts, there is the humble, low-rise Beach Front Motel. A more guileless, straightforward approach would be hard to find. The highway signs even warn of gopher tortoise crossings. Yes, that slow.
