Former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick released from prison after Trump commutes sentence

Whitmer: Kilpatrick s crimes reprehensible but his sentence harsh

LANSING – Gov. Gretchen Whitmer says former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick s crimes were reprehensible, but the 28-year prison sentence he received was disproportionate to what others have received. People can decide for themselves if this is a just outcome, but I do think that when justice is not equal, it is not justice, Whitmer told Fox 2 Detroit on Thursday. Whitmer was reacting to former President Donald Trump s Tuesday announcement that he had commuted Kilpatrick s sentence, which resulted in Kilpatrick being released Wednesday from federal prison after serving less than eight years. Kilpatrick, 50, had been fighting for his release for years, arguing he was wrongfully convicted on numerous corruption charges in 2013, forced to go to trial with an attorney he didn t want and railroaded by what his lawyers described as an overzealous government. He lost all appeals.

Cleveland TV s Paul Orlousky Remembers Being Punched, Kicked, Spat On, and Sometimes Thanked

Gray & Company Publishers Paul Orlousky s new book looks back on five decades as a journalist most of them in Cleveland TV. Cleveland reporter Paul Orlousky retired earlier this year after five decades in news. Now, he’s back with a new book looking back at his career. He says the title “Punched, Kicked, Spat On and Sometimes Thanked” comes from the hazards of reporting stories such as one in the 1980s when he found that police officers assigned to a hospital weren’t working the hours they claimed. “I put the story on the air and 35 of them were suspended. Two of them got the bright idea to pay me back. So, they wrote some fake tickets on me, so there was a warrant out for me. It was a stressful thing, but it put me on the map in Cleveland [and] people thought of me, now, more as a Carl Monday or a Tom Meyer – some of the seasoned investigators in town.”
