Cubs inside-the-park home runs, 1901-15

Cubs inside-the-park home runs, 1901-15 By JohnW53 on Apr 23, 2021, 7:29am CDT + Last year, I published a 4-part series of posts about the Cubs inside-the-park home runs. The numbers cited in those posts were obtained using baseball-reference.com s Team Batting Event Finder. But the database that it searches goes back only to 1916. Now, by examining the individual home run logs of every player who homered at least once for the Cubs from 1901-15, I have documented all of the team s inside-the-park homers the Cubs hit in the first decade and a half of the Modern Era. .... During those years, the Cubs hit

Cubs best, worse season records vs opponents

Cubs best, worst season records vs. opponents By JohnW53 on Apr 14, 2021, 6:37am CDT + On Saturday afternoon, Aug. 4, 1945, the Cubs and Reds played the middle game of a 3-day, 5-game series at Crosley Field in Cincinnati. Only 1,377 spectators were on hand to see the Cubs grab a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning, on a single by Don Johnson, a double by Peanuts Lowrey and a 2-out triple by Andy Pafko. The Reds tallied a run in the second. The Cubs added a third run in the fourth. In the fifth, Cubs pitcher Hy Vandenberg gave up a pair of 1-out singles, then a double that drove home both runners. A walk and a double play left the score tied at 3.

Batters who made team s only 3 hits vs Cubs

Batters who made team s only 3 hits vs. Cubs By JohnW53 on Feb 20, 2021, 5:38am CST + On Opening Day of last season, Kyle Hendricks shut out the Brewers on 3 hits all by Orlando Arcia. Right after the game, I used the search tools at Baseball-Reference.com to generate a list of all 3-hit, complete-game shutouts by Cubs pitchers since 1901. There were 152, of which 62 took place in the first 20 years and 90 in the next 100. Hendricks was only the fifth of the 2000s. I checked the box scores of all 152, either online or in contemporary newspapers, in search of other games in which the same player made all 3 hits.

Half-lives of Cubs championship teams

Half-lives of Cubs championship teams By JohnW53 on Jan 31, 2021, 7:04am CST 4 45 players: 20 position players and 25 pitchers. If the 2021 season began today, only 6 of those 45 still would be a Cub: Javier Baez, Kris Bryant, Willson Contreras, Jason Heyward, Anthony Rizzo and Kyle Hendricks, the lone remaining pitcher. Remarkably, 2016 was the final season with the Cubs for 21 of those 45 players: 7 position players and 14 pitchers. The position players who did not return in 2017 included 2 who had appeared in at least half of the team s games in 2016: outfielders Dexter Fowler (125) and Jorge Soler (86). Among the departed pitchers were starter and 15-game winner Jason Hammel (30 games) and frequent relievers Travis Wood (77) and Trevor Cahill (50).

Post-season exhibition games, Part 9: Barnstorming and war

Post-season exhibition games, Part 9: Barnstorming and war By JohnW53 on Jan 18, 2021, 4:41am CST + .... In some years between 1901 and 1913, after concluding their National League schedule, the Cubs played more than a dozen more games in October, not counting the World Series or City Series. In 1914, they played none. Maybe it was because there had been a surfeit of Major League baseball in Chicago that year. The Cubs played on the west side, the White Sox on the south side and the city s team in the new Federal League played on the north side, in their splendid new ballpark bounded by Addison and Clark streets, and by Sheffield and Waveland avenues.
